The second quarter of 2023 witnessed a 57% surge in cargo theft in the U.S. and Canada, as reported by CargoNet’s 2023 Q2 Supply Chain Analysis. The heightened occurrence of theft, especially concerning high-value goods and misdirected shipments, resulted in an industry-wide loss of over $44 million. It is noteworthy that theft was most prevalent in California, Texas, Florida, and Illinois, with organized crime groups increasingly employing extortion and conversion schemes. Additionally, the report indicated a rise in fictitious pickups, wherein thieves impersonate authorized drivers to pilfer cargo.
